Message from Gavin re:12:00 NOON Performance
Just a reminder to everyone who is performing in tomorrow's 12:00 performance:
Despite what you may see or hear about the company dancers doing silly things or playing jokes onstage, this is as serious a performance as any other. You are NOT allowed to do anything other than your choreography, exactly as you have learned it!
:)

Photos in Costume...
Most of the photos in costume have been taken. We will finish a few more today and one or two tomorrow. If you have NOT had a photo taken in a particular costume and you would like one, please let me know this afternoon so we can schedule it in.
Loren and I will go through the pictures the first week of January and I will hand them out during SOBT classes. At that time you can bring in the payment and we will swap pictures for money. I will post when that is going to happen here and on the SOBT blog.
The cost is $15.00 for the first photo and $5.00 for each additional copy (I believe this is of the same photo, but I will check on that.)
If you would still like to sign up to purchase pictures, the stage door chaperone and I have the order forms.
Thank you, Shari

A Message From Gavin:
Dear Children's Cast of Nutcracker 2011~
I want to let you know that I won't be able to be at the Friday evening or Saturday matinee performances. I'm going to the east coast to be with my family for the holiday, and need to leave a little earlier than I had planned. I will miss seeing your last two performances very much, but I'm completely confident that you'll dance beautifully!
I also want to take this opportunity to thank you all, each and every one of you, for your hard work, dedication, commitment, enthusiasm, and discipline. We've all worked hard together-- you, myself, my student assistants (Olivia, Elle, Julia Rose, Ian, Hannah, Jenny, Caroline, Mackenzie, Elizabeth), Shari, and the parent volunteers-- to make this Nutcracker season come together. I'm proud of our efforts, and especially proud of your performances onstage. You've become young professionals, and I hope you carry everything you have learned about the experience of performing with you as you move on through your ballet training and life.
Keep the energy (and precision!) going for these last three performances. Remember, it's not over until the very last curtain comes down, and every audience needs to see as good a performance as the one before!
With love,
Gavin

A note from GAVIN
Great shows today, everyone! Let's keep it up for these last few performances-- what's hardest about being a performer is consistency. Now that you have all gotten comfortable being onstage, the main thing is to stay very focused and not go on "auto-pilot". Consistency means thinking constantly about what you're doing, whether it's your first performance or your 14th.
One general note for all Act 2 dancers is to listen a little harder to the music. Especially when the orchestra is playing, the tempo may be slightly slower or faster than you're used to. Unless every single one of you listens closely and dances right on the music, you won't be together. The balances in the big finale step were a little "popcorn-y" tonight. Please stay right on the beat.
Get as much rest as you can, and wash your hands a lot so we keep everyone healthy!

NOTE from Shannon Goffe:
SOBT students are NOT allowed to have cameras, phones, or other electronic devices backstage. Any student caught with these items will not be allowed to dance for the remainder of the run.

Please note the earlier Battle Scene call time. We will have a short Soldier rehearsal, before the afternoon performance. Please be on time! Thank you.

Hair Wisps
We seem to be having a problem with hair wisps. Here is a trick from Gavin - first wet the hair, smooth it out, and then spray it with hairspray. Not only will you need less hairspray, but wisps will be gone!
Notes from Gavin - Monday, December 19
ACT 1:
ACT 2:
- Party Children-- t he march was much better, but please keep thinking about doing each step as cleanly and precisely as you can.
- Still, some of you are "spacing out" during the doll dances. Believe it or not, the entire audience is NOT only watching the dolls dancing! You absolutely must stay alert, engaged, and focused on what is happening in front of you. I noticed a couple of you with completely blank expressions, and sort of halfway holding your arms up as if you were unaware of what you were doing.
ACT 2:
- Angels were good tonight, but some of you are still not smiling very much~ I love that you are concentrating so hard, but how about a little smile for the audience?
- Candy Canes--- we're losing the position of your parallel passe at the end of the dance. Make sure you really twist that position and then do a nice sharp soutenu, and don't go into the final pose too soon.
- Better energy in the finale, everyone, but something weird happened during the port de bras-- it looked like a dozen different versions of the timing, instead of each pair of arms moving exactly together.

Nutcracker Photos in Costume
We are going to take photos of all the children/youth beginning tonight. The cost will be $15.00 for the first picture and $5.00 for each additional copy. I will try and have the pictures of the Party Children and Angels taken tonight and tomorrow. We will then continue with Soldiers, Polis and Candy Canes later in the week.
I will have a sign up sheet for orders at the stage door. Please note child's name, role (one role per line), and how many copies you would like. The money will be due when you pick up the pictures - date TBD.
Thank you,
Shari

Chaperone Schedule for Thursday and Friday, Dec. 22 and 23
Please look at the open spots and let Venus know if you are available! Thank you.
(This schedule may not reflect recent changes.)
NOTES from Gavin - Sun, Dec. 18 Evening
Sunday, Dec. 18 Evening Performance:
Act 1:
1. Soldiers: You’re getting a little slow with running out of the castle to salute to Marie. Really keep counting the music so you salute exactly together and on your count--- run, 2, 3, 4, stop on 5, salute 6, 7, turn on 8.
2. Trumpeter and Bunny: Do not leave the cheese bag on the floor--- you must hang it up on the back of the castle or else it will be left on stage for the snow scene. Any leftover cheese must be INSIDE the bag, not on the floor!
NOTES from Gavin - Sun, Dec. 18 Matinee
Sunday, Dec.18 Matinee:
Party Scene:
1. Family #1 girls and Marie—you need to skip further across the stage, so you end up in front of Frau Stahlbaum.
2. No touching the scrim when you are all trying to look through the keyhole!
3. Boys’ March: Elvis and Anathea, you marched too far forward, so that by the time you stopped, you were almost on the black part of the floor. Please remember to hold back so you stop in the first panel of gray marley.
4. The Boys’ March was generally sloppy. You are mostly doing the correct steps, but you have to hold yourselves strongly and do the steps as cleanly as if you were doing your tendus in ballet class! During the march is when the boys stop holding their arms firmly behind their backs, which is not good!
5. Megan, when you whisper to Fritz to pull Drosselmeier’s cape, you must be clear with your mime. Make sure your hands are around your mouth when you whisper, not just around your face somewhere, like you are REALLY telling him a secret.
6. All Party kids—boys and girls—need to show more excitement when the dolls first appear out of the boxes. Remember, you have never seen this before! Even boys should be interested and excited!
7. Sarah, make sure you don’t pull the hobby horse away from Marie too early.
8. Marie and the rest of the children were too far forward after Fritz grabbed the Nutcracker away from her. I think Maries need to be aware of coming too far forward, and Fritzes and Party kids all hold it upstage a little. When the girls kneel around Marie for the lullaby, there needs to be enough room in FRONT of Marie for the Nephew to slide the doll bed to her, without having to be on the black part of the floor.
9. ***** DO NOT TALK DURING THE DOLL DANCES!****** Javier said that today some of you were calling his name while he was dancing. That is disrespectful and distracting.
Battle Scene:
1. Sabres--- you have just got to pull that mouse! It’s not going to be easy, but you just HAVE to do it. Bend over, reach out, and grab those ankles and PULL!
2. Jenny, you can go a little closer to the Mouse King before you throw your shoe at him.
Act 2
1. Angels: Good job today! But I would love to see some happier expressions on your faces. During the Sugarplum Fairy’s variation, keep your face looking happy, and your arms lifted.
2. We had this talk already, but I’ll repeat it for all the other casts of Polichinelles and Candy Canes: NO WISPY HAIR! Spray the back of your head a lot more and use more pins. And all boy Polis need to pin their hats.
3. Polis need to watch their lines a little better- all girls in a straight line, and all boys in a straight line right behind them.
4. Candy Canes: Finale step still not exciting enough! Step out more, jump higher! Smile bigger!

Chaperone NOTES...plus...
If you filled out a chaperone questionnaire and volunteered, please check the blog twice daily. The schedule is posted there; just because you have not heard from us individually, you may still be scheduled to chaperone!!!
We are low on volunteers for some shows; if you find a blank spot and can fill it, please email Venus at obt.chaperone@gmail.com.
If your child is staying past his/her pick up time PLEASE send a note stating that - include when you will pick him/her up and a phone number where you can be reached. Four children stayed through the show today without notes. Chaperones may leave once their cast is released unless children remain at the theater. You are asking another parent to stay longer than their call!

Notes from GAVIN - Saturday, Dec. 17 - PLEASE READ!
Notes from Saturday, Dec.17 matinee:
Party Scene:
Battle Scene:
Act 2:
Party Scene:
- Party Boys, PLEASE remember to hold your hands firmly behind the small of your back! Most of you look like your hands are on your hips because you're not holding them completely behind your back. This happens especially when you're doing the march step and during the Father-Daughter dance. Please pay attention to this!
- After the Grandparents enter, the group of girls (and boys when they join from the candy table) is still too close to the center of the stage. You're crowding the action at center stage. Girls, please keep the group closer to the wings, and boys, don't crowd closer to center when the Frau Stahlbaum opens the candy box.
- Party Girls, please stay excited and animated during the Harlequin and Columbine doll dance. You started to get a little glazed-over and bored today.
Battle Scene:
- Sentry, Trumpeter, and Bunny: I need you to move the cannon to center sooner. As soon as the soldier move into their V formation, start the wheels rolling so you can get the cannon to center in time. You can even get your hands positioned on the cannon to move it when the sabres stab the mouse.
- SABRES: I need you to be more aggressive and really drag that mouse after you've stabbed him. I know it's hard, but you've just got to reach down, grab his ankles, and PULL.
- BUNNY and TRUMPETER: Still more cheese-throwing! Grab a couple of pieces in each hand and throw them as high and far as you can.
Act 2:
- Angels: Good job today! I know you know that you're supposed to cross in front of the Sugarplum Fairy. Even if she seems too far in front of you, still cross in front of her. I asked her to stay back a little so it will be easier for you next time.
- Veyonce, remember to stay on diagonal with the Prince when you are standing in front of the Sugarplum Fairy (before and after the Prince's pantomime). Both of you should be visible to the audience.
- Good pantomime, Wyatt!
- ALL POLICHINELLES: I spoke to today's cast about this, but all Polis should be aware that if you touch the Mother Ginger skirt while you're coming onstage, the audience can tell that there are people underneath. If you're too crowded or afraid you'll trip (and are on the stage right side underneath the skirt), move to the back of the skirt. Make sure you don't punch or touch the skirt from underneath.
- Reminder to all Candy Canes to watch out for the scenery when you run on for your dance so you don't catch your hoop on it!
- Candy Canes, please keep your backs straighter when you bow to the Sugarplum Fairy during the greeting.

PLAYBILL Errors
I want to apologize for the misspellings and omissions in the Playbill. Unfortunately, the wrong list was posted and by the time I asked to proof it it had already gone to print. I am working with marketing to see what we can do. I am told it will be corrected online , although I do not, yet, know how to access the online version. I will also make copies of the corrected page for everyone.
My sincere apologies to all the dancers. I know you work hard and deserve to be properly recognized!

NUTCRACKER Review
From opening night: Glowing words from the Oregonian’s Martha Ullman West re: The Nutcracker: http://www.oregonlive.com/performance/index.ssf/2011/12/the_nutcracker_review_precisio.html
....The children -- all of them, party guests, the battle scene bunny, angels and polichinelles -- gave the smoothest performances ever, thanks at least in part to training by their coach, Gavin Larsen, and their teachers in OBT's school. As Marie, Jennifer White acted heroically in the battle scene and slightly spoiled at the party, just as she should. As Fritz, Colin Trummel was appropriately bratty, and Wyatt McConville-McCoy as Drosselmeier's nephew, later transformed into the Nutcracker Prince, demonstrated considerable stage presence, performing the second act mime with impressive clarity. One polichinelle, the third to emerge from under Mother Ginger's skirt, danced with such radiant joy you couldn't take your eyes off her....
You are all wonderful. Thank you and congratulations on a successful opening night.
Shari

Photographs of Dancers in Costume
I have been working with marketing and our photographer to schedule time to take pictures of the children and youth in costume. We will begin the process on Monday. I will let you know when each group will have their pictures taken. Please be aware that on picture day your child will be released 15 minutes later than scheduled. I will post a schedule as soon as it has been decided.
One 5 X 7 full body photograph in a nice cover will cost $15.00. Each additional copy of the same picture will cost $5.00. I am working on getting forms to hand out. I hope to collect the forms and money the same day as the picture, so Loren, the photographer, will know how many copies to make.
More information to follow.....

Notes from GAVIN from Saturday, Dec. 10
Notes from Saturday, Dec. 10 Matinee:
Great show, everyone! I have just a few things for you to think about for next time:
Party Scene:
· The spacing is still a little off when you all make a V-shape for the Boys’ “battement, chasse, battement, bow” step and the Girls’ “sauté attitude, chasse, sauté attitude”. (This is after the March and just before Dr. Stahlbaum leads you as you run under the parents’ arches to start the Father-Daughter dance). Fritz and the inside girl (Jane or Grace, I believe) should be right in line with the couches in the back of the stage, not too close to center. Just be aware of being too close together.
· When the Grandparents enter, the group of girls and boys on stage left (before the candy box) should be a little further AWAY from center, and closer to the wings. If you are too close to center, you block the Grandparents.
· In the Grandparents’ Dance, boys please kneel all together on 8 when you present your partner with the wrist corsage.
Battle:
· Good energy, soliders, and please keep it up!
· And great cheese-throwing, Mattias and Mary—I’d like all casts of Bunnies and Helia to also throw great big fistfuls of cheese as far as you can when the cannon goes off. Take at least two pieces in each hand at one time and throw it really high and far!
Act 2:
· Good job, Angels!
Thank you for settling into B+ all together, Candy Canes and Polichinelles- it looked great. (Can the other casts of Polis and Candy Canes do that as well? In the opening of Act 2, after the boat comes in and the Polis run to the other side of stage before the pantomime, the Candy Canes should watch the Polis so you all settle into B+ at the same time).
·
Candy Canes: Also good! (Holley, the first pose before you kneel is a straight leg tendu—I think you were doing plie tendu)
·
Polichinelles: Good—we talked about heels forward as you pique arabesque, chasse, tour jete, keeping your arms strong and clean, and not throwing them behind you during the echappe-changement-passe step.
·
Finale: Candy Canes, try to lower your hoops all together (stay exactly with the girl in front of you) when you are in the single line along stage left.
·
Everyone, keep your port de bras exactly in unison! Try to match the person in front of you precisely, so we see 16 pairs of arms all moving as one.

Hair, Make up, and Costume NOTES
Please arrive at the theater with your hair ready; under-dressed in the required leotard and tights for your character; with base and mascara on; have your LABELLED shoes with you.
Angels: your hair needs to be as FLAT as possible for the wig. Please look at the picture and wrap the hair one time criss-crossed LOW around back and pin the ends up both sides of the head.
Thank you all for helping to make the Dress Rehearsal run smoothly. I think we have a better grasp on the costumes after tonight.
Dancers when you return to wardrobe you may remove your costume, BUT stay in line and hold onto your costumes until you are called forward by the wardrobe crew to hang it up. This way we know that costumes are being hung on the correct hanger for the next performance. NO costumes should touch the floor or be left around.

Maintenance Classes at SOBT
Maintenance classes begin tomorrow at SOBT. They are for Level 4 through PD and Level 3 students who are Polichinelles (barre only).
If you have a call at the theater you will be excused from the Maintenance class. Party girls need to get their hair ready and be at the theater by 12:30, so you can be excused if needed.
When you are at the studio, you may ask to use the Pilates room to get your hair done and make up on, however I do not know if it is available.
For a complete schedule see the SOBT Blog.

Party Boy Hair for Girls...
Since you will be wearing a wig, the girls should wear their hair just like the angels. Two low braids that criss-cross in the back, pinned up along the sides. The party boy wigs are thin, so the hair needs to be as flat as possible.
Final Dress Rehearsal, Friday, December 9th
I am sorry about the confusion over tonight's dress rehearsal. Dancing on stage tonight is the same cast that will be performing tomorrow, December 10th.
Everyone who is performing on December 10th should be there tonight for final dress rehearsal, including ALL Nephew/Princes and Maries. Call times are posted in the production schedule and on the blog.
(Marie, Prince and Party Boy will be Ratcliff, Myers, and Meo.)
If you are NOT dancing on Saturday, December 10th, you do NOT need to be at the theater tonight. We will see you at the theater on Sunday, December 11th - call times are listed on the production schedule.
Please let me know if you have any further questions. Thank you.

Production Schedule and Casting
Hopefully everyone received a copy of the production schedule and casting list. If you did not, please pick one up after Friday's Dress Rehearsal.
Please read through the "Important Information". If you have any questions email me at: shari.goss@obt.org
Believe it or not, we have already found a few casting mistakes (I know, it's hard to believe.) I ask that you look very carefully through the schedule and cast list and highlight your dancer's name. No one should dance more than two roles in any one performance. And only one role in Act II. If you find a discrepancy or have a question do not hesitate to contact me either through email or by phone.

Misc. Notes
Please do not wear earrings to the theater. They must be taken out before the performance and can easily be lost.
If you have a quick change, be sure to bring bobby pins and hair supplies.
Write you child's name on everything...shoes, water bottles, anything you do not want to lose!
Please do not pack the "kitchen sink" in your dance bag. We are very limited on space in our 5th floor holding tank. Only bring what is necessary for the performance and "quiet" time.
And finally, I want to thank everyone for your kind words. It's been a pleasure meeting you all.

Drop Off and Pick Up
Pick up:
Considering we released 90 children/youth at the same time, tonight's pick up ran rather smoothly! From here on out, we will be releasing dancers at staggered times, so it will be much easier and faster.
Drop off:
There is a fifteen minute drop off window. Please DO NOT drop your child off more than fifteen minutes before their call. A chaperone will be outside, so DO NOT get out of your car and walk your child into the theater, it blocks the drop off lane and everyone behind you has to wait.
Thank you

Chaperones Past and Future
Thank you one and all! You make my job so much easier! A few notes from tonight....
Costumes - because we are in a union house, chaperones have been asked to NOT handle the costumes. Our job is to keep the dancers lined up and calm while the wardrobe crew calls them forward one at a time. We will have an experienced dresser tomorrow who will help smooth out and speed up the process. Chaperones are welcome to help with bows and shoes, but NOT costumes. (I learned a new "bow" trick that I will show you all.)
If there is a costume problem, the dancer should tell the lead chaperone. The lead chaperone will take a note and give it to Belinda, David, or Pam.
Beginning Friday night chaperones need to wear ALL black. If you are not in black (or very dark colors) you will not be allowed backstage.
Whenever your group is moving from one area to another, I would like one chaperone in front leading the way and one in back bringing up the rear. Everyone should WALK in single file and to the right as they go up and down the stairs. If you are alone with a group, please lead the way - the kids have a tendency to run from place to place.
SEVEN new Posts - Please read them all!
There are seven new posts (not including this one.) Please read all the way down!
Production Schedule Letter to Parents
I apologize for not getting the Production Schedule and Cast List "hard copy" out today! I started to make copies and ran out of time before I had to run to the Keller. What a great day - long, but productive!
I have posted the Cast List again and the Production Schedule through Sunday. Here is the letter that will be attached. Please read through it, if you can. (I have found that I can double click on the attachment, once it is enlarged I right click on it and press copy. I then paste it into a Word document.)
I will be in the office early to finish the copying. It will be handed out at PICK UP. Please do not forget to PICK one UP after rehearsal Thursday night!

RE-Posting the Casting for Performances
The casting schedule now includes quick costume changes (in blue) and costume changes from one act to the other (in yellow). I have also included the photo booth dancers.
